It is recommended that individuals opt for sober living because it creates a foundation for life-long sobriety.
Sober living homes are usually in single family residence, multi-unit complex or duplex located in residential areas. They are commonly individually owned or run by a small partnership. Those that choose to continue their recovery at one of these homes are required to comply with a strict set of rules that encourage recovery and life without drugs. Sober living homes are usually gender specific.

The cost of sober living is dependent upon location, services provided and how many people are living in the home. Rent typically costs anywhere between $250 and $1500, but there are exceptions of higher-end sober living homes that can cost more. Because those living at a sober living facility are not considered tenants, there is often no security deposit and they can be ejected upon the discretion of the home owners at any time.
Due to residents at sober living not being considered tenants, they are not required to sign a term of lease. Residents usually stay from 90 days to a year. The goal is to get people ready for their lives of sobriety so once they are ready, recovering addicts are encouraged to continue life independently.
